Rag Quilt Tutorial

Like I said before I've gone crazy making baby blankets!! So here is Tutorial # 2.

Flannel Rag Quilt Tutorial

You will need 1/2 yard of five different coordinating flannel fabrics. Cut your fabric into 50 8 inch squares. (You will have 10 squares of each fabric.)

DO NOT WASH THE FABRIC FIRST. Put your

squares wrong sides together as shown. Stitch a 1/2 inch seam all the way around each square.

Once all your squares are stitched get down on the floor and lay out the squares until you get the design you like. Five rows of five squares.

Pin your squares together (back sides together) one strip of five squares at a time.

Stitch the strips with a 1/2 inch seam. Then pin your strips together and stitch them together (back sides together)with a 1/2 inch seam as well.

Snip all the seams and outer edge at 1/4 inch intervals as shown being careful not to cut through any seams.

Now wash you quilt in warm water and detergent. Do not use fabric softener yet. Shake it well and dry without using dryer sheets. Check your lint filter often. Now wash again using fabric softener and dry using dryer sheets. The more you wash your quilt the better it looks!!!!

That's it. You're finished. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will be doing a tutorial on a cotton rag quilt in the near future. Thanks for looking!!!

Throughout Europe and the United States, Horseshoes are often seen nailed to barns and houses and as charms on jewelry. They are an accepted sign of good luck, though most people don't think about why that is. The origin is believed to be tied to the proscribed magical powers of iron. Iron is considered lucky because it is born from the marriage of rock and fire, two of the basic elements in ancient times. Blacksmiths, makers and users of iron, were alchemical masters of the elements and their byproducts. Accordingly, their creations were believed to be endowed with supernatural powers. These powers helped in a story that says the 10th Century Archbishop of Canterbury foiled Satan when he was disguised as a horse because of the power of the positive power of the horseshoe. The fact that well made horseshoes aided in the health of a valuable resource, the horse, also helped. In addition, the basic shape of the horseshoe, which is either a cup, a crescent, or an arch depending on your point of view, is traditionally said to be lucky. The crescent is a moon symbol that has luck-giving properties in ancient Mediterranean cultures because of moon-goddesses. Also, the typical number of seven nail holes in a real horseshoe is considered lucky in European tradition.

Oven Baked Brown Rice Recipe

I'm always trying to find ways to eat healthier!!! This recipe is a staple at my house and it is super easy to make.

Oven Baked Brown Rice Recipe

2 1/2 cups chicken broth or chicken stock
(preferably low sodium)
1 1/2 cups brown rice
(I use 1 1/4 cups brown jasmine or brown basmati rice and 1/4 cup wild rice)
3 Tbsp dehydrated onion
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1 Tbsp olive oil
(you can omit this and it will be just as good)

Preheat oven to 375º
In a small saucepan bring the broth to a boil
In the meantime, measure out your rice and put it in a 8 x 8 square glass casserole dish
Add the dehydrated onions and garlic
As soon as the broth boils pour it over the rice
Stir
Cover with 2 pieces of foil
Bake for 1 hour
Thats it!!! Super simple!!!

I like to stir in sauteed mushrooms after it comes out of the oven. Be inventive, you can stir in any veges, herbs, parmesan cheese, leftover chicken etc!!!

Baby Blanket Tutorial

I am a new Grandma to a beautiful baby girl named Maddie. So I was inspired to make a baby blanket. I haven't made a blanket like this for over 20 years and it's was great to find such fun and funky fabrics to work with. Well, so far I have gone a little overboard and have already made 3 blankets. (Maddie is only 13 days old) and I have plans for more blankets, bibs, cart covers etc!!! LOL. Anyway this will be the tutorial for the first one.

All you need is 1 yard of cotton fabric, 1 yard of flannel fabric, a contrasting spool of thread, and 2 packages of large ric rac if desired.

Put your fabrics right sides together with the flannel on top and pin. Trim the edges if needed so all of the edges are even. Both of my fabrics were 45 inch width so I didn't have much trimming. Fold back the flannel layer as shown.

Pin the ric rac and measure from the edge 1/2 inch so you will be stitching along the bottom edge of the ric rac.

Stitch the ric rac all the way around the flannel layer folding it at the corners as shown.

Now put both pieces of fabric right sides together, flannel on top and stitch all the way around just beyond your other seam to catch the ric rac right down the middle. Leave a 5 inch opening so you can turn the blanket right side out.

Now turn your blanket right side out and press. Top stitch all the way around 1/4 inch from the edge. This will also close the 5 inch area you left open.

Thats it!!! You've got a cute baby blanket. You could make it smaller and use as burp cloths or for a car seat blanket or go bigger for crib size. Play around with the trims. Lace, ruffles, etc!! The possibilities are endless!!
